The rise and fall of Waiuta gold mine

The ghost town is dotted with old broken wreckage's with moss infested chimneys that will rot for all eternity. The historic town is located at end of Snowy road. Waiuta was the South Island's biggest gold mine and at 1930 it reached around 600 people. It is also the most famous ghost town in the South Island.

History

In 1905 the gold reef was discovered. It was found on King Edward VII’s birthday so they called it Birthday Reef. In 1908 the first mine shaft the Blackwater Shaft opened. In total it was 567m deep. In 1926 a new mine opened called the Prohibition. In 1930 the population reached up to 600 people. In 1936 the Prohibition mine took over the work. It all ended in 1951 when the Prohibition mine collapsed and the town was abandoned.

Gold and contamination

The Waiuta gold mines were the most wealthy mines of the 20th century in the South Island. The mine produced nearly 750,000 ounces of gold from 1.5 million tons of quartz. That is $1,869,255,217 in today's value. The level of arsenic is 33,000 times the safe limit for drinking water. There were 96 barrels of highly-contaminated arsenic material removed from the Prohibition site for treatment and disposal at a specialised facility. It cost $3.6 million to clear out the water.

Waiuta town

Waiuta was a sports town. It’s main sport was rugby but they also played tennis. Waiuta also had a bowling green. If you go there now you can see the rotting rugby poles swaying in the breeze. As the town was abandoned and Tony Mangan’s Family was last to leave. It was left it to the ghosts and modern age explorers.

Personal inquiry reflection

My inquiry is going good and I think I will get it done. I am behind schedule on my timetable but I still think I will get it done. I think I have achieved what I want to achieve and it has gone very good.

This term we have have now got active with our personal project my timetable has helped me heaps. I have made a lot of changes to my timetable because of  so many new ideas. I have completed what I have planned to do and I have done heaps. My project feels like it is just the right size for my skill.👿👾👿😈👾😈

To his horror the fairy was standing there

As the petrified man sticks his round head above the dark
brown fence, it rose out of the ground like a tree in the pitch
black darkness. He stumbled as he brought his head
over the fence. He saw the most horrifying sight that he had
ever seen in his whole entire life. A look of terror spread on
his small face as he shook his head to make sure his eyes
weren’t tricking him. The proof was the slight humming
noise of irritation rising from deep inside the belly of the
beast. He tasted the the damp soggy rags as he stared
into space, He knew it had ended for his poor endanged
soul. Right there standing in front of him with a smirk
spread across her face,
The evil fairy was standing there looking at him…

This week I have been focusing on getting my work done. The week is shorter than usual for me because I went to a ICT conference in shanty town. The week has been good I got almost everything done.😶😶😶😶

The new SLD (self directed learning ) has been going for the term 1 term 2 and term 3. I think it is a good change from the normal school and it has gone pretty well for me. I really to hope that this the same for the rest of my primary school. I think it is a cool different and awesome new approach to my learning. I think this is a really cool change. ⏳🔀😎

“Leave me alone, I’m about to watch the lights in the sky!” Bellowed Pauline. “Ok don’t say I didn’t warn you” says Gubtal. “What do you mean didn’t warn you”. “Sorry got to go”. Then Pauline lifts her flat, round head up to watch the bright shining lights that were in the sky. That’s really strange thought Pauline. I thought that bright lights didn’t get brighter or bigger than they started I thought they just stayed there like motionless blobs. As they got even lager and they became the brightest lights ever seen to the weak human eye, she thought what month is it. It  was August. Then she realised that It was perseid falling towards her.

Weekly reflection

Personally my week think my week has gone pretty well. What I need to work on is being more focused but I always seem to just get everything done. Sometimes I don't know how but it gets done eventually. I have been on top of most things but I need to remember to update my Trello. I hope I do better next week but I haven't done bad. I do still think I could do better.

Once there was a little house in a big, dark valley surrounded by trees looming over the place like they were going to fall over any second. The house that was like had been crumbled up by a big giants hands. Around that spooky house was an out of shape town that if you listened closely it sounded like a bomb was about to go off. In 1230, BC this town stood but know if you go there you will see a pile of embers and ash. This valley had mines all through and there was fain squelching noises that came out of them. No one ever went in the mines because they were all to scared about the last time someone went in there. All the heard were screams bloodcurdling screams then silence. Then after a while a man with a head in the wrong place and red eyes came out.

Billy is walking down the road playing his chopsticks making a clicking noise all the way down the road. Everyone said that he was strange with his red eyes and the way his head in on his shoulder. They say the way he plays his chopsticks drives people mad and sending them to space. He is a very confusing man Bob said one day to his brother he is very confusing. Then when Billy was walking home Bob followed him down the street and around the corner to his house but instead of going through the door Bob dug a hole into his house and came out in the bathtub.

This is five minutes of work and we had to write our character that is our paper back writer.

So what fires happen all the time and they are dangerous.

I am unconnected from this term I fell tired This week could go a lot better I am just unfocused. This really wasn't the week for me D: I just really need a rest. Next week I need to be focused.

Once their was a boy who wanted to be paperback writer. He had his life laid out perfectly. When he grew up he wanted to go to a stall on the side of the road and write books. Then he would cell them.

When he was 16 he left home and he bought a little stall on the side of the road. Then he started writing books but he didn't have any paper or ink so he didn't go very well.

Weekly reflection

I think my first week of the term has gone good. I have balanced my time out and got everything I needed to get done done. I think next week I could do more work but I did get everything done. We got to do coding and that is really fun. I have had a good week.

Quick write

The greatest sportsperson in the world was billy mc bob.
When he was a baby he was already running and when he
wanted to get through the door he just ran past it
he was to fast for his own good.

When he was 10 he was in a school cross country he
was too fast he couldn’t get through the gate. After a lot of
teasing waiting and ladders he finally made it through.
Once in his race. Did one lap in a matter of seconds and he
was just about to make it to the end just before the line he
tripped and fell. He tried to get up but he just fell over again.
He lost the race and everyone started being blinkered.

This is important because it actually shows how little thing can cause a lot of destruction

Plot line for three little pigs.

The three little pigs get sent of from there home to go make a mark in the world. They go off and
find a place to build their houses.

The first one makes his house of straw the second one makes his house of sticks the third one
makes his house of bricks.

The big bad wolf blows down the first pigs house then eats him the second pigs house then
eats him and tries to blow down the third pigs house but fails

The big bad wolf climbs up onto the roof to go down the chimney to get in the house so he can
eat the pig.

The pig puts a pot on the fire and the wolf falls in the pot and then the pig puts the lid on.

The third little pig eats the big bad wolf for supper.

This was a quick write we only had 10 minutes to make plot line for the three little pigs.

There were two friends one called Billy one called Bob. They lived in a little house on a little farm in a little town with a little watering can. The watering can was very old and it had been passed from generation to generation. Bob thought there was something up with the watering can but they just didn’t no what…

One day Billy was watering the garden when POOF. There was a bang and another dimension suddenly appeared in front of his curios eyes. He called to Bob and said “Hey there is something up with this watering can”. Then when Bob came Billy pushed the friend into the mysteries portal and then jumped in himself. It closed behind them.

My holiday

On Saturday in my school holidays I went to the swimming pool for our last swimming lessons for the term. The warm up was really long and actually more tiring than the rest of the swimming. After the warm up I got to do a few dives and then the rest of it was the hydro slides and that was a lot of fun. On Monday my friend Patrick came to our house sadly it rained for quite a lot of the day so we played inside with my remote controlled lego racer. Patrick came for a sleepover and on Tuesday it wasn’t so rainy so we went outside and played a game on the swings. He had to leave early because our gran and grandad took us out to the movies to watch the incredibles 2. On Wednesday we went to the library and did a tomb builder thing were we had to build a life sized egyption tomb and things to go inside it. I built a cicoughages with my brother.

We only had ten minutes so I couldn't fit my whole holiday in.

How microbes help with your gut

All you need to know to get healthy

Have you always been eating unhealthy and you just can’t stop? Do you just want to know what to eat for a change. Well eat fermented food it helps with your gut and makes you healthy. You will just fell the change if you look after your microbes, take prebiotics and probiotics, and you have a balanced diet. That’s all the steps to have a healthy gut.

Microbes

Your microbes are a very important part of your body. There are more of them than your actual organisms. What they do is when you eat food you can’t Physically  digest the microbes the eat it for you. The microbes are protected by your immune system so the stronger your immune the better your microbes work and stay alive. Sometimes your microbes don’t form very well depending on how you were born. There are lots of different microbes some of them like unhealthy foods some of them like healthy food.

Diets

You need to keep a healthy diet or your microbes can take over. If you eat to much healthy food or to much unhealthy food they just take over. If you ate a lot of unhealthy things then your unhealthy loving bacteria will Multiply  and then they will take up to much space and force the healthy food loving microbes out. After the microbes get to strong they just take over your stomach and then you have no more room inside of it. That is were prebiotics a probiotics comes in.

Prebiotics and probiotics

Prebiotics and probiotics are completely different things even though they sound the same. Probiotics are more microbes and prebiotics is the food for the microbes. If you don’t take probiotics then you don’t have unuf microbes. If you don’t take prebiotics then there isn't enough food for the microbes. If you take a lot of probiotics and no prebiotics then you will have too much microbes and not enuf food for them.

What happens when you don’t look after your microbes

Microbes are very important parts inside of your body because they keep you alive. If you don’t look after them then you will die. The main reason is to eat healthy so that you keep healthy and in shape. You don’t know what could happen if your not careful.

Quick write about sausage rolls

I am at a sausage roll shop and I just bought a sausage roll when there was a big loud thud on the roof. Then someone shouted out atavism ( it must have happened before ). It was a meteor shower. They were falling like rain falls from the sky. Everyone fled as fast as lighting so I decided that maybe running was the best idea. I was still holding my sausage roll because I could feel the hungynous growing inside me.

At school we do a quick write every day and this day we had to write about a person running with a sausage roll.

My weekend journal

Saturday was the day of town. At 15 past 8 we left our house to go to swimming lessons because the town pool opened. Me and Zak had our lessons 'till 9:30 and they started at 9:00. Kaelyn's one started at 9:30 and went 'till 10:00. So we had half an hour to play. Logan was there. We got the rafts out and had a play. After swimming we went to our friend Daniel's house for a play. We built the tree house there and we made a bottom story. Then I got bored because there was nothing for me to do so I went inside.

My holiday

In the holidays Patrick came over for a play date. When he came we decided to clear up the bush track that Zak, Kaelyn and me built. We cleared it out to the end and then we saw a barb wire fence. We jumped over that and I got a million scratches. After that we came to a fence that we thought was electric. There was mud on the other side. they told me to test it so  I touched it with a piece of grass. I didn't get a electric shock, so I touched it with my finger and guess what it hit me. So we had to jump over it. Zak and Patrick made it fine but when I tried I landed n the mud and fell over sideways. Then we came to another electric fence. We had to crawl under it. Same thing again I had to get dragged. Finally we were back.

How to be good at sailing

Weekend journal

Sunday was the last day of sailing lessons, not for the year because the people running it thought that they could have another go in October when the wind is stronger. It wasn't a very windy day they should have had it on Saturday because it was windy and it didn't rain at all. The day started of cloudy and there wasn't the slightest bit of wind. The as they day wore on the wind picked up and the rain just started to spit. At the end of the of the day it poured and the wind evaporated.

Book review on refugee

Book review on Refugee

Title: Refugee                                         Author: Alan Gratz

The book was about three children called Josef who is 13 and lives in Germany tries to escape to Cuba, Isabel who is 11 and lives in Cuba tries to escape to America and Mahmoud who is 12 lives in Syria tries to escape to Germany. They are all refugees that are trying to escape their country!

I think the three way story line was cool because they overlapped like Mahmoud ends up living with Ruthie ( Josef’s sister ) for a bit. Also the fact that Lito ( Isabel's grandfather ) turned the boat away that Josef was in ( the St Louis ). All the story lines also had similarities like Mahmoud is trying to escape to Josef’s home country who is trying to escape to Isabel’s home country. It was also interesting how the story lines were set in different times.

The low part was there were a lot of cliffhangers at the end if the novel like the mystery of Hana, what happened to Josef’s father and what happened after Mahmouds family finishes living with Ruthie. I really want there to be a Refugee 2 so that the mysteries are solved. The author also left us hanging after nearly every chapter like when “the rubber dingy popped and Mahmoud fell into the sea”.

I think that the best part of the story was when in Mahmoud's chapter it explained what happened in Josef’s chapter because were it ended didn’t sound like it should have.

I recommend this story for people who are 10-20. Also for people who like action packed stories

Weekend journal

On Thursday it was a big day because we went to Hamner springs for my birthday. We left on Thursday even though my birthday was on Friday because I didn't want to be in the car on my birthday. My friend Daniel came for Friday and Saturday when he left. We stayed from Thursday till Tuesday. On Friday we climbed up Mt Isabel for my birthday and Jo Daniel's mum brought an Easter egg up an stuck candles in it. On Saturday we went to the hot pools, it was really  busy a whole Australian school came and it was crazy busy. On Sunday it was a mix of Easter and April's fools day. On that day we climbed up conical hill and had a rest. On Monday we went to a mini golf there lots of contraptions like a loop-de-doop, some water and a pipe tunnel.

Mr cook came in to our class and did a science experiment. The experiment was to put the balloon inside the bottle without it popping.

How to make potato bake

I did this because our school garden had lots of potatoes and we did not no what to do with them. We decided that we cook them into a meal then write instructions on how to make it. There was three groups one did wedges one did hash browns and one did potato bake.
